['səʊʃl ənd 'lɪbərəl demə'krætɪk 'pɑːtɪ], Abkürzung SLDP [eseldiː'piː], auch Social and Liberal Democrats, seit Oktober 1989 Kurzbezeichnung Liberal Democrats ['lɪbərəl 'deməkræts], britische Partei, gegründet im März 1988 durch Zusammenschluss der Mehrheit der Social Democratic Party mit der Liberal Party. Parteiführer wurde im Juli 1988 Jeremy John Durham (genannt Paddy) Ashdown (* 1941). Die Liberaldemokraten nahmen in ihre Programmatik u. a. die Änderung des (Mehrheits-)Wahlrechts, eine wirtschaftliche Modernisierung, aktive Umweltpolitik, die Verbesserung des Erziehungssystems und die Unterstützung einer europäischen Integration nach föderativem Entwurf auf. Bei den Parlamentswahlen vom 1. 5. 1997 erhielten sie 16,8 % der Stimmen (46 von 659 Sitzen im Unterhaus).
